Chapter 2 Vocabulary Words.





  • Provisions- n. a supply or stock of something needed.
  • Sentence- The Jews had a few of provisions left on their trip.
  • Bitterness- adj. causing pain; piercing; stinging
  • Sentence- The Germans had a bitterness look to them when it came to the Jews.
  • Hysterical - adj. irrational from fear, emotion, or an emotional shock
  • Sentence- The lady lost her son so she became hysterical.
  • Pious- adj. having or showing a dutiful spirit of reverence for God or an earnest wish to fulfill religious obligations
  • Sentence- Madame Schachter's husband was a pious man.
  • Anguish- v. to suffer, feel, or exhibit anguish: to anguish over the loss of a loved one.
  • Sentence- The little boy lived an anguish life with his mother.
  • Console- v. to alleviate or lessen the grief, sorrow, or disappointment of; give solace or comfort
  • Sentence- Only her friends could console her when her boyfriend broke up with her.
  • Monotonous-adj. having very little inflection; limited to a narrow pitch range.
  • Sentence- Doing the same thing everyday is so monotonous.
  • Scouring- v. to remove dirt, grease, etc., from or to cleanse or polish by hard rubbing, as with a rough or abrasive material
  • Sentence- The only thing I did at work was scour the sink.
  • Truncheons- n. a staff representing an office or authority; baton
  • Sentence- The police officer used it truncheon to hit the criminal who tried attacking him.
  • Auschwitz-n. a town in SW Poland: site of Nazi concentration camp during World War I
  • Sentence- Millions of Jews were sent to Auschwitz.
