Chapter 7 Vocabulary Words

  • indifference- n. lack of interest or concern
  • Sentence- We were shocked by her indifference of poverty.
  • distinguish- v. to mark off as different (often fol. by from or by)
  • Sentence- He was distinguished from the other boys by his height.
  • halt- v. to stop; cease moving, operating, etc., either permanently or temporarily
  • Sentence- They halted to a stop to get a drink of water.
  • inert- adj. having no inherent power of action, motion, or resistance
  • Sentence- The weak prisoners were inert to even do anything else.
  • spectacle- n. anything presented to the sight or view, esp. something of a striking or impressive kind
  • Sentence- The stars make a fine spectacle tonight.
  • vitality- n. exuberant physical strength or mental vigor:
  • Sentence- An extraordinary vitality had seized the men.
  • spectators- n. a person who looks on or watches; onlooker; observer.
  • Sentence- A crowd of workmen and curious spectators had collected along the train.
  • disengage- v. to release from attachment or connection; loosen; unfasten
  • Sentence- I had to disengage the clutch when I was driving.
  • grimace- n. a facial expression, often ugly or contorted, that indicates disapproval, pain, etc.
  • Sentence- The Red army were surprised to see a lot of grimace faces.
  • loomed- n. a hand-operated or power-driven apparatus for weaving fabrics, containing harnesses, lay, reed, shuttles, treadles, etc.
  • Sentence- My grandmother had a loom used for weaving.
  • convoy- n. a ship, fleet, group of vehicles, etc., accompanied by a protecting escort

  • livid- adj. having a discolored, bluish appearance caused by a bruise, congestion of blood vessels, strangulation, etc., as the face, flesh, hands, or nails.

  • wailing- v. to utter a prolonged, inarticulate, mournful cry, usually high-pitched or clear-sounding, as in grief or suffering
  • Sentence-I wailed from pain after I hurt myself.
  • Buchenwald- n. site of a former Nazi concentration camp in central Germany, near Weimar.
  • Sentence- Buchenwald was the concentration camp for Jews.
