- How does Wiesel treat his father during the journey to Buchenwald and later during
his dad's illness? How does Wiesel’s link to his father affect his will to survive? Elie had a close relationship with his during the journey to Buchenwald not until they got there. Elie took care of his dying father, but had thoughts of not to. He decided to not take care of him instead but then he felt ashamed if he did so. Elie did what his father wanted him to do and that was bring him water.
Given their life or death situation, do you believe Wiesel’s attitude toward his father was understandable?
Explain your reactions One of their life and death situations was when they were resting. They would soon face death if they dared slept for a very long time. A few hours of sleep meant sleeping forever, because they might not even wake up anymore. They struggled to keep themselves awake at some time,- Elie weeps (cries) several times in the book; explain when and why. Explain one time he does not weep when it would be expected. Elie wept when he got separated from his father during the selection. That one time when he didn't cry was when his father died. Not one drop of tear fell from his sunken eyes. One thing that was in his mind was that he was finally free. Free at last. he could now think of himself and no other.
What feelings and thoughts went through your mind as you read about Wiesel’s final experiences
as a German prisoner? What would you say if you could talk to him about this time in
his life? What would you want him to explain to you? My thoughts would be how can they survive such a thing and what made him survive the holocaust. If i was in his place I would just die then suffer. Suffer from exhaustion and starvation. I would ask Elie if there was a time when he just felt like giving up.
