Chapter 5 Questions

Part 1.
1. Ellie wondered why should he bless Him. Him who had thousands of children burned in His pits. The one who kept six crematories working night and day. The one who created Auschwitz, Birkenau, and Buna. Ellie doesn't know why should he say, " Blessed art Thou, Eternal, Master of the Universe, Who chose us from among the races to be tortured day and night, to see our fathers, our mothers, our brothers, end in the crematory? Praised be thy Holy Name, Thou Who hast chosen us to be butchered on Thine altar." Ellie believed he was the accuser and he accused God of all that is happening.

2. Ellie and his father has been separated into different units. Even though they're separated, they still have a strong relationship. Ellie fears that his father isn't going to make it through. From this I can tell that Ellie is worried over his father. His relationship between him and his father changed in a way, because they became closer. As far as I know I don't have a relationship with someone who I can depend on and will sacrifice anything for me, because I don't really depend on other people. I'm an independent young woman.

3. On pg. 68 Ellie faces death. The death he faced was called selection. Selection is when the prisoners each had to run as fast as they can, and if they are considered weak, then their number gets written down, and unfortunately they get killed. i think this was death for Ellie, because he was running for his life, proving the officers he wasn't a weak one. i think Ellie's survival was just luck, because he tried his best to run as fast as he can.

4. Three Vocabulary Words
functionaries- n. a person who functions in a specified capacity, esp. in government service
Sentence- There were functionaries outside of the building.
crippled- n. a person who is disabled or impaired in any way: a
Sentence- The man has been crippled since birth.
pits- n. a naturally formed or excavated hole or cavity in the ground
Sentence- The pits were created by erosion.

Part 2.
  1. How was the day different of any other? (Rosh Hashanah) The day was different than of any other, because the Jewish year was nearly over, and it was the last day.
  2. Find 3 examples that show that Elie’s faith is questioned. The three examples as quoted in the book that Elie's faith is questioned are, "What are you my God, compared to this afflicted crowd, proclaiming to You their faith." Whqat does Your greatness mean, Lord of the universe, in the face of all this weakness, this decomposition decay, and this decay?" Why do You still trouble their sick minds, their crippled bodies?"
  3. How was the solemn service? Ten thousand men attended the solemn service. The service was about God, and its questions. The service had ended with the Kaddish.
  4. What was Yom Kippur? Yom Kippur was the day of atonement.
  5. Why does Elie not fast? Elie didn't fast, because he wanted to please his father, since his father had forbidden him to do so.
  6. Why do you think he has a feeling of great void? I think Elie had a great void, because he no longer accepted God's silence, and he wanted to rebel and protest against him.
  7. Where was Elie transferred to?What was his new job? Elie had been transferred to another unit where he had to work 12 hours a day just dragging heavy blocks of stone.
  8. What do the SS man do when they found a weak one? When an SS officer find a weak one, they write that weak one's number, and then that prisoner faces death.
  9. Describe what selection is like? Prisoners had to undress, then they get check by the doctor. lastly one by one they run as fast as they can, if their too weak, their number gets written down.
  10. Who was Dr. Mengele? Dr. Mengele, who checked prisoners, and wrote their numbers down if they were chosen as the weak ones.
  11. Why was his dad in panic? Elie's father was in panic, because his number has been written down.
  12. What was the inheritance? Why would he need those things? The inheritance that Elie received from his father was his knife and spoon. The things can be useful for Elie in the near future.
  13. Did his dad leave? Who was not so lucky with the selection? Elie's father did not leave, but he tried catching up with the other group. Akkiba Drumer was the victim of selection.
  14. What is going on with his foot? Elie's foot began to swell because of the cold.
  15. What journey were they going to go on? The camp was going to be mined, so the prisoners had to evacuate.
  16. Why do they wash/clean their area before leaving? They washed their area clean before leaving so no evidence would be present of their crime.
  17. Based upon this chapter, how can you describe Elie's dad, his attitude, and his relationship with his son? Examples. Elie's dad lost hope, since he thinks hes weak. His father also doesn't have confidence. He gave Elie his knife and spoon, because he cares about his son, and he thinks Elie would need it more than he would.
  18. Eliezer's foot swells up, and he undergoes an operation. While he is in the hospital recovering, the rumor of the approaching Russian army gives him new hope. Tell me who he meets in the hospital, what happens, and why did he not stay in the hospital to heal? A doctor meets Elie in the hospital and tells Elie the news and what was happening outside the hospital. Elie didn't stay in the hospital to heal, because he wanted to go out and look for his father,
