A Long Way Gone Ch. 11 Questions

1. How did the boys grieve Saidu’s death? The boys all cried except for Ishmael which he was trying to hold back tears by covering his face with the palm of his hands. They stopped, because they all knew they could only grieve for a short period of time while continuing to stay alive.
2. Who is Gasemu? Gasemu used to be one of the notorious single men in Ishmael's town.
3. What does Gasemu say about his family? Gasemu told Ishmael how Ishmael's parents and brothers will be happy to see him. They have been talking about Ishmael everyday and pray for his safety. His mother cries everyday, begging the gods and ancestors for Ishmael to return back to her. His older brother came looking for him and came back with a sad face blaming himself for everything.
4. How did he feel when he thought of seeing his family again? Ishmael felt happy at the thought of seeing his family again.
5. What happened as he was going down the hill? As Ishmael was walking down the hill, he heard gunshots,dogs barking, people screaming, and crying. He then saw a thick smoke rising from the village.
6. Describe the village after the gunshots? After the gunshots, the village was completely on fire and bullet shells covered the ground like mango leaves in the morning.
7. Why did Gasemu start screaming? Gasemu started screaming, because he saw more than twenty people lined up laying facedown in the Earth. His sobs grew louder as he turned each body over.
8. What happened to the house Ishmael’s family stayed at? The house where Ishmael's family stayed at burnt down buring the door and window frames, and the mud that had been pushed in between the sticks was falling off.
9. Why did he have a guilty feeling? Ishmael was feeling guilty, because there was nothing he could do to help his family. If they havent waited on the hill, he wouldve seen his family. Anger filled his head and took his anger out on Gasemu.
10. Describe the 10 rebels they saw, how were they acting? The 10 rebels were laughing and giving each other high fives. Two of them looked slightly older than Ishmael. They had blood on their clothes, and one of them carried the head of a man which he held in the air. The other rebel carried a gallon of gasoline and a big box of matches. The rebels sat on the ground and started playing cards, smoking marijuana, and boasting about what they had done that day.
11. What were the rebels boasting about? The rebels were boasting about what they had done that day. They had burnt three villages that same day.
12. Could you relate to any of the tragic events in this chapter or do you know some A-holes that are ruthless like the rebels? I dont personally know people that are ruthless like the rebels.
13. What happened to Gasemu in the end? Where did Gasemu tell the boys to go? Gasemu had been shot while they were running away from the rebels. Gasemu told the boys to go to the wahlee.
14. How do you think it made Ishmael feel seeing a familiar face and being recognized? Ishmael felt glad seeing a familiar face and being recognized.
15. What feeling do you think they were feeling knowing they were close to seeing their families? I think the boys felt a feeling of happiness and excitement knowing they were close to seeing their families.
16. Have you ever been so close to getting something you want and have it slip away from you? Yes, I've been so close to getting something that I wanted and have it slip away from me due to that one mistake that I made.
17. Do you think any of the boys families made it out of the village? I think the boys families made it out of the village.
